Tinder Is Losing Subscribers. Chicago Has Cuffing Season. WGN Just Covered "Phone-Free Dating."
Let's start with a WGN Daytime Chicago segment that aired in October 2025.
The headline: "The Rise of Phone-Free Dating During Cuffing Season."
The setup: As dating app fatigue grows, the phone-free dating trend is rising — "especially as we near the start of cuffing season."1
The segment featured Sarah Hinkes, founder of Sparks Dating, explaining how her in-person events are helping Chicago singles reconnect authentically. The timing was not incidental. October in Chicago is not a casual month for singles. October is when the calendar turns, when the lakefront closes, when the window between summer and the first real cold snap slams shut. October is when Chicago singles — with a specificity that does not exist in San Diego or Austin or LA — decide whether this winter is one they want to navigate alone.
The app has always been the fallback. The segment confirmed that the fallback is failing.
The Numbers Behind the Exit
Globally, the dating app market posted its first annual revenue decline in 2025 — falling 1.7% to $6 billion.2 Tinder paying users fell 8% year-over-year. Bumble revenue dropped nearly 10%.2
78% of dating app users globally report burnout from swiping, matching, and being ghosted.3 Two-thirds say they want to meet in person instead.4 Singles events on Eventbrite doubled nationally from 2022 to 2025, with 2024 seeing a 30% rise in events and an 85% jump in attendance year over year.5
In Chicago specifically: over 900,000 singles in the city. A dating scene built around neighbourhood loyalty, seasonal urgency, and the specific social pressure of knowing that the Midwestern winter is coming and the lakefront will not be usable until May. And — relevant to the cuffing season argument — January through March sees the very highest dating app activity in Chicago due to cuffing season and New Year's resolutions, per Ablaze's Chicago analysis.6
The apps peak in winter. They also fail in winter. High volume, low connection, maximum cold outside. The phone-free dating trend is arriving precisely at the moment when the phone was supposed to be most useful.
What Cuffing Season Actually Creates
Here is the Chicago dating dynamic that is unlike any other city in this series.
Cuffing season — the annual October–November social pressure to find a partner before the brutal Chicago winter sets in — is documented, named, and confirmed by every Chicago dating guide. It is the reason the WGN segment aired in October. It is the reason the speed dating and singles event calendar fills up specifically in fall. It is why summer has three times more outdoor singles events than winter, and why the indoor events that survive winter are the ones people actually attend with intention.6
In most American cities, seasonal change influences dating mildly. In Chicago, it is a forcing function. The person who arrives at an October speed dating event has already made a calculation: it is cold, getting colder, and I am doing something about this. The urgency is real and the action is intentional in a way that July swiping — when the lakefront is available and the alternatives are endless — simply is not.
The apps, which run at the same temperature year-round, cannot replicate this. They peak in Chicago in January-March but produce the same diluted outcome regardless of the season. The urgency of cuffing season is real. The app converts it into the same 14% match-to-first-date rate it produces in June.

"From River North to Wicker Park, Chicago brings warmth, confidence, and chemistry,"7 the MyCheekyDate Chicago page says.

River North — upscale professionals 28-45, finance and tech, after-work crowd at The Dawson.11 The most expensive first dates in Chicago but the highest concentration of successful professionals.
Wicker Park and Bucktown — the creatives, musicians, and entrepreneurs who value authenticity over status. Independent coffee shops, live music venues, art galleries. Logan Square-adjacent energy, slightly more established.12
Logan Square — artists, musicians, writers 25-38. Dive bars meet craft cocktails. The most alternative of the active neighbourhoods.11
Lincoln Park and Lakeview — young professionals 25-35, sports bars, traditional date spots, daytime parks, brunch-heavy weekends. Cubs territory.12
Andersonville — diverse, LGBTQ+-welcoming, neighbourhood warmth that is specifically Chicago in feel.10
Lincoln Square — family-oriented neighbourhood with the Half Acre Beer Co draw for the 30s-40s crowd.11
The apps connect everyone regardless of neighbourhood and produce the mismatch. The speed dating events in the West Loop, River North, and Lincoln Park draw from those specific geographies and produce a more naturally compatible room.
The Second Date
MyCheekyDate published their Chicago second-date guide in February 2026. It is worth quoting directly because it is the most specifically, lovingly Chicago content in this series:

This guide exists because people are matching and having second dates and wanting to know where to take them. The 1,700 events are producing this. The Riverwalk walk exists because the room at Tabu produced a mutual Smart-Card selection. The city's best social infrastructure is unlocked by the room.
Cubs vs. Sox, and Why It Matters
The Chicago AI article in this series established Cubs vs. Sox as a genuine dating compatibility marker — not small talk, but social identity, class marker, neighbourhood loyalty, North Side vs. South Side.
A specific Chicago connection story from another speed dating platform confirms it: Lauren, a consultant in the Loop, matched with Ryan, an engineer in Lincoln Park, during a virtual speed dating round. His humor and authenticity came through immediately. They met for beers at a Wicker Park brewery and bonded over Cubs fandom. Five months later, they're planning a ski trip to Michigan.14
Cubs fandom as the connecting thread. A Wicker Park brewery as the location. The specific geography of two North Siders finding each other through the speed dating mechanism that their shared neighbourhood alignment made natural.
This is Chicago dating at its best: specific, neighbourhood-rooted, season-aware, and entirely unavailable through an algorithm that has no knowledge of which side of the city either person lives on.
What Phone-Free Dating Season Actually Is
WGN's October 2025 segment named something that every Chicago dater has always known but that the app industry specifically worked against: the phone itself is the obstacle.
Not the app. Not the algorithm. The phone. The device that sits on the table during the first date. The screen that keeps the options open while you're supposedly investing in the person in front of you. The notification that arrives mid-conversation and pulls attention back to the queue.
